Learning Through Landscapes

Owls' visit to Norwich Cathedral

In September 2024, Owl Class had a fantastic morning at Norwich Cathedral, exploring the building and finding out about signs and symbols of God’s love.  We learned about the history of the cathedral, including the importance of the cathedra (Bishop’s throne).

Mrs Smith and Mr Walker were very impressed with the children’s questions and responses.

Hedgehog Roman Day

In September 2024, the children in Hedgehog class arrived at the marching camp, met Julius Marcellinus, and learnt about the equipment of a Roman legionary.

We handled camp equipment and tried on legionary armour. We experienced camp jobs, played Roman games and sampled some ‘delicious’ Roman hardtack and a two-thousand-year-old lentil stew recipe.

In the afternoon, we handled a range of authentic Roman artefacts and tried to work out what they were and who they could have belonged to. We finished the day with authentic legionary training, learning how to march with a shield.

Learning About the UK Parliament

In June, we were joined by Kelly from UK Parliament gave an assembly about our electoral system. Pupils learned about constituencies, what an MP is and the voting system. They explored the roles of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. They particularly enjoyed creating their own name as a Baroness or Lord and the role play involved with creating a new law. Lots of ‘ayes’ and one ‘no’ could be heard when a Bill for a four day school week was proposed. Watch this space…

LEGO Discovery Workshop

In June, Mr Walker and Mrs Smith took a group of children from Year 1 to Year 3 to a LEGO Discovery session at Norwich City FC.

The children used digital instructions and touchscreen Chromebooks to build a campsite LEGO sets.  They then used coding to program their sets with movement sensors, light sensors and sound effects. What a great experience it was!

Africa Day in Squirrel Class

Squirrel Class have thoroughly enjoyed their Africa Theme Day. Wearing non-school uniform in the colours of African flags, the children have participated in a number of different activities including African drumming (ably supported by Years 5 and 6), scarf making and cooking some delicious cous-cous! They were also visited by Rev Austin, who showed them some traditional costumes and taught them some songs.  They were also visited by Mrs Bedder who spoke to the children about life in South Africa. Thank you so much to Mrs Singleton for organising this lovely day!

Tri Golf Festival

In May 2024, children from Saxlingham and Preston enjoyed a half-day at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club.  The festival introduced the children to the sport of golf, and they enjoyed participating in a range of games and challenges which honed their golfing skills.  Many thanks to Miss Walker, Mrs Newson and Mr Walker for taking the children.

Djembe Drumming

In April, Squirrel Class took part in a drumming workshop as part of a project on Africa. Gary taught us how to play djembe drums and we had great fun practising rhythm patterns. We did really well at playing together as a group!

Hedgehog and Owl Classes gave a performance of Djembe Drumming to parents/carers after several weeks of ensemble music learning.

Well done to everyone and a big thank you to Gary and The Norfolk Music Hub

The Boy at the Back of the Class

In April 2024, Hedgehog Class visited the Theatre Royal to watch a performance of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’.

The performance was amazing and had the class laughing and emotional all at the same time!

It follows the story of Ahmet, a Syrian refugee, and a group of children who bravely try to find his family before the ‘gates close’ on refugees.

The Hedgehog class were a great audience and loved the theatre experience!

'To the Moon and Back' - Norwich Science Festival

As part of the Norwich Science festival 2024, Saxlingham welcomed Ben Langley, who performed the play ‘To the Moon and Back.’  An awful lot of space-related learning took place through the play and workshops that followed.  It was great to share this learning with Grasshopper Class from Preston Primary School.
